Why Students Struggle with Math

Elie Venezky

On the 2015 National Assessment of Educational Progress, only 37% of high school seniors and 33% of 8th graders tested competent in math. American students are ranked 30th worldwide in math. Struggles with math cause a lot of tension and stress with both students and their parents.

One of the big issues is that the way math is tested on most standardized tests is different from the way math is taught and tested in school. Students just aren’t prepared for the difference. As a result, students lose confidence, which affects performance, which further lowers confidence in a vicious cycle that usually never ends… (until now!)…

Current online math programs aren’t succeeding because most are just recreating the same formulas that haven’t worked. Students need a program they can use without feeling judged, where they feel motivated to learn and can do so without having to know exactly where to start or what to do. And they need a program that will bridge the gap between school exams and standardized tests, so they understand and can apply their knowledge. Milestone Math does this.
